Year 8 public speaking lesson 3 STARTER Can you figure out what ‘LOGOS’ means? Clue: Think of any other words you can think of that starts with LOG – Another clue: It’s a GREEK word – and in its original meaning is ‘the word of God’ Year 8 public speaking lesson 3 Lesson Objective To identify and use an example of LOGOS

New Word Alert!!! LOGOS Using logical explanations Sounding reasonable Stating a ‘truth’ (you are not dealing with scientific facts – just persuasion/ possibility)

What’s WRONG with this argument? Ghosts exist. I know this because I’ve seen one. By stating this as a fact you are not allowing your audience to think for themselves. You will distance yourself from your audience if you don’t engage them, or if you make out like you know better than them. If it’s a debate you can do that, but not with public speaking. Most likely, you will be the only person in the room who can relate to this. This line of thought is only ‘logical’ to you. The other people in the room may start to think you are crazy.

How to turn it round? Your argument should be allowing the audience to think about your topic. Make it relate to them (even if they are non-believers) Ask yourself and the audience some questions.

BETTER! Why do some people believe in ghosts? Why do some people have beliefs that are different to other people’s? What do YOU believe in? Then, you will understand how important my belief in ghosts is, and even if you have never SEEN one, chances are that you have THOUGHT about it.

In Groups… You are putting yourselves forward to be the year 8 group who get to go on an educational exchange to a school in America. Create a speech which persuades your audience (students, teachers and governors) that you are the group who would most benefit from taking part in the trip Remember to use ETHOS, HYPERBOLE and LOGOS

Public Speaking Lesson 4 Lesson Objective: To use PATHOS

New Word Alert!!! PATHOS Appealing to your audience’s emotions Sharing emotion as a room full of people

The people who would read/watch your speech/campaign New Word Alert!!! Target Audience The people who would read/watch your speech/campaign

The SPECIFIC group of people who would be in the audience What does this mean? Being specific about things like: GENDER / RELIGION EDUCATION / BELIEFS LOCATION / POLITICAL BELIEFS JOB /AGE New Word Alert!!! DEMOGRAPHIC The SPECIFIC group of people who would be in the audience FOR EXAMPLE: These are some of the DEMOGRAPHICS that I fall into: - University Educated - Adult female 28 – 35 - Professional (Teacher) - I live in South West London - I live and work in the Borough of Hounslow

Homework Look through Magazines and newspapers and watch the news and adverts…. Yes, that IS your homework! Keep a copy of at least 2 examples of RHETORIC (language used to PERSUADE) from your research. Pick out examples of ETHOS, LOGOS and PATHOS as well as examples of HYPERBOLE in your examples – try and explain specifically WHO the target audience is and how the language and images APPEAL specifically to that audience Write a sentence which explains how these techniques are used effectively. Level 5 and above: Write about how the language and images WOULDN’T appeal to a DIFFERENT audience

Charity Target Audience Emotions that the advert appeals to Reasons why it appeals to those emotions Barnardo’s Water Missions International Keep a child alive Lung Cancer Alliance
