Irrelevant Sentences They’re not important

Review of Paragraphs A paragraph has a TOPIC. The reader learns about the TOPIC in the TOPIC SENTENCE. Every supporting sentence has to be about the topic and the idea. A paragraph has a concluding sentence that lets the reader know the paragraph is finished. A concluding sentence often re-states the topic and the controlling idea.

Irrelevant sentences… Sometimes, extra sentences can get mixed up in our paragraphs. They often have some interesting facts, but don’t match the controlling idea. These are IRRELEVANT SENTENCES

Do you need it? Always check to see if each sentence matches your topic AND your idea when you’re writing paragraphs. This is why rough drafts are important. You can check your work first, before giving it to the teacher for a grade. Topic sentence: More people should have cats as pets.

Do you need it? Always check to see if each sentence matches your topic AND your idea when you’re writing paragraphs. This is why rough drafts are important. You can check your work first, before giving it to the teacher for a grade. Topic sentence: More people should have cats as pets. Cats are great hunters and can catch mice in your house. Cats can be good companions because they like to snuggle. Dogs are popular pets, too. This doesn’t fit the idea of cats as pets.

Which sentence doesn’t belong? (I) Like many insects, ants have six legs. (II) An ant colony consists of the queen ant, workers, soldiers and males. (III) They are very strong so they can run very quickly. (IV) If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as fast as a racehorse. (V) Although many ants are tiny and only three millimeters long they can lift 20 times their own body weight.

(V) Although many ants are tiny and only three millimeters long they can lift 20 times their own body weight. This sentence is about the colony, but the topic is about a single ant.

Which sentence is irrelevant? (I) For many years, all books were written by hand. (II) Because it took so long to write one book, there were only a few of them. (III) Most people could never own a book. (IV) Then sometime between 1450 and 1460, Johannes Gutenberg got the idea of carving separate letters and moving them to make new words. (V) Gutenberg died at the age of 68. (VI) This was the invention of moveable type. (VII) From then on, the numbers of books printed grew quickly.

This sentence is not about the invention of the book.

Which sentence doesn’t belong? (I) Rainforests are extremely important in the ecology of the Earth. (II) They cover about 7% of the Earth's surface and are havens for millions of plants and animals. (III) The plants of the rainforests generate much of the Earth's oxygen and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. (IV) There are many types of tropical rainforests in the world. (V) However these plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness.

This sentence is about rainforests, but not about why they are important to the ecology of the Earth.

Which sentence is irrelevant? (I) The explosion of the Columbia shuttle on re-entry to the earth's atmosphere in 2003 had several causes. (II) The first cause was the very tight launch schedule. (III) NASA were under pressure to keep to this schedule and did not allow enough time to check the shuttle properly after its previous mission. (IV) The previous mission had included the first civilian astronaut. (V) Another important cause of the explosion were the high winds on launch. (VI) These winds had dislodged a few of the insulation tiles. (VII) Moreover, these tiles had crashed into another part of the rocket causing further damage to the booster. (VIII) NASA engineers were aware of the issue with the tiles, but they did not think that the problem was a serious one.

The topic is about why the shuttle exploded, so we don’t need to include information about the previous flight, unless it caused a problem (it didn’t).
