Solving Equations Using Algebra Tiles a unit tile and a variable tile; we can use tiles to represent an expression unit tile = one yellow tile represents + 1 a long tile represents a variable such as the letter n variable tile = What algebraic expression do these tiles present? = 2n + 5

Steps for solving equations: Mr. Pomeroy collects model cars. His friend gives him 2 cars. Mr. Pomeroy then has 7 cars. How many cars did he have at the start? 1) Make an equation n + 2 = 7 2) On the left side, put tiles to represent n + 2. On the right side put tiles to represent 7. 3) Next, make the two sides equal by isolating the variable. Remove the 2 unit tiles from the left and do the same to the right in order to get the solution. n = 5

Try it! Two more than three times a number is fourteen. Step 1: Hint: arrange units on right side into 3 even groups when multiplication is used Step 4: n = 4
