1 How to Solve Linear Equations

2 Contents This presentation will consist of how to solve equations with variables on both sides using algebraic tiles. It will also show two examples showing the correct usage of Algebra tiles. The steps for solving Linear Equations will also be covered in this show

3 First off, set up the problem.
2(a+4)=2(a-4)+4a = First off, set up the problem.

4 Now, make the x tiles on only one side of the problem
Now, make the x tiles on only one side of the problem. Do this by cancelling out and using zero pairs. Do this on both sides. These equal zero

5 8=4x-8 Now the problem is 8=4x-8. Now you must isolate the x tiles. So add eight to each side to use zero pairs. =

6 16=4x The value of 4 x is 16 so the value of x is 16 divided by 4. Do this by setting up the tiles in four groups. 4=x

7 Set up the problem again
3(x+6)=5(x-4) Another example… = Set up the problem again

8 Once again, make the x tiles on only one side of the problem
Once again, make the x tiles on only one side of the problem. Do this by cancelling out and using zero pairs. Do this on both sides. Subtract three x from each side =

9 38=2x Now the problem sets up like this. Add 20 positive one tiles to the red tiles on the right side of the problem. These equal zero. Add 20 to the left side also. =

10 X=19 Divide both sides by two. Put the tiles in two groups x=19

11 Summary In this Presentation we learned how to solve equations with variables on both sides using algebra tiles. We hope that you enjoyed the presentation and learned the objective.
