Climate Graphing

What are we Graphing Here?

What is Temperature? Temperature: The degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or object, especially as expressed according to a comparative scale and shown by a thermometer or perceived by touch.

What are we measuring for Outdoor Temperature?

Temperature of the AIR When we measure temperature on the Earth, we are measuring the temperature of the AIR around us The Air (Atmosphere) is able to keep the Earth’s temperature quite stable! Whereas a planet with no Atmosphere would witness MASSIVE differences in temperature from day to night!

What do we measure the Temperature in?

Celsius (C) Of or denoting a scale of temperature on which water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100 degrees Everything else is relative to this Much simpler than the Imperial scale of Fahrenheit!

What is Precipitation?

Precipitation Any form of Water that falls to the Earth’s surface during the “Water Cycle” Falls from condensed water vapour known as Clouds Can be in the form of : Rain Sleet Snow Hail

Are Temperature and Precipitation Connected? This you will discover on your own!

Why would this Climate Graph NOT WORK for Hamilton?

2 Pieces of Data on a Graph Temperature: Left Side Line Graph 0 degrees in the middle Increase by “5” going upwards and downward Up is positive and Down is Negative Precipitation: Right Side Bar Graph 0 mm is on bottom of graph Scale depends on the information that you are looking at

Let’s Convert this CHART into a Climate Graph! Calgary Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Temperature (C) -7 -5 -1 5 10 14 17 12 6 -2 -6 Precipitation (mm) 11 20 40 60 80 85 65 44 23

A few More Calculations!

Approximate Average Temperature? Calgary Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Temperature (C) -7 -5 -1 5 10 14 17 12 6 -2 -6 Precipitation (mm) 11 20 40 60 80 85 65 44 23

Approximate Average Temperature Add the Highest and Lowest Temperatures together and divide by 2 Highest Temp: 17 Lowest Tem: -7 17 + (-7) = 10 10 / 2 = 5 Approximate Average Temp: 5 degrees C

Temperature Range? Calgary Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Temperature (C) -7 -5 -1 5 10 14 17 12 6 -2 -6 Precipitation (mm) 11 20 40 60 80 85 65 44 23

Temperature Range The Difference between the Highest and Lowest Temperatures Subtract the LOWEST from the HIGHEST 17 – (-7) = 24 Temperature Range: 24 degrees C

Total Precipitation? Calgary Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun Jul Aug Sept Oct Nov Dec Temperature (C) -7 -5 -1 5 10 14 17 12 6 -2 -6 Precipitation (mm) 11 20 40 60 80 85 65 44 23

Total Precipitation Add up ALL of the Precipitations for each month 10 + 11+ 20 + 40 + 60 + 80 + 85 + 65 + 44 + 23 + 14 + 10 = 462 Total Precipition: 462 mm

Your Task Complete the steps that we have just done for 3 different parts of Canada Lastly, Translate a GRAPH back into a CHART
