1 MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE

2 Areas surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, California, in parts of Western and South Australia, in southwestern South Africa and in parts of central Chile

3 Climate encompasses the temperatures, humidity, rainfall, and wind in a given region over long periods of time, as opposed to the term weather, which refers to current activity.

4 At least we don’t have to deal with this
PRECIPITATION At least we don’t have to deal with this

5 Precipitation is any product of the condensation of atmospheric water vapor that is deposited on the earth's surface, i.e., rain, snow, sleet or hail

6 One way to analyze precipitation is by creating a precipitation graph

7 You will create four precipitation graphs.

8 Average precipitation for 30 years
ORLANDO, FL Average precipitation for 30 years Jan=2.5 Feb=3.0 Mar=3.0 Apr=2.5 May= Jun=7.0 Jul=7.5 Aug= Sep=6.0 Oct=2.5 Nov=2.0 Dec=2.0

9 Average precipitation for 30 years
NEW YORK , NY Average precipitation for 30 years Jan=3.0 Feb=3.0 Mar=4.0 Apr= May=4.0 Jun=4.5 Jul=4.5 Aug= Sep=4.0 Oct=3.0 Nov=3.0 Dec=3.0

10 Average precipitation for 30 years
ALBUQUERQUE, NM Average precipitation for 30 years Jan=0.5 Feb=0.5 Mar=0.5 Apr=0.5 May= Jun=0.5 Jul=1.0 Aug= Sep=1.0 Oct=1.0 Nov=0.5 Dec=0.5

11 VENTURA CO., CA Average precipitation for 30 years Jan=3.0 Feb=1.0 Mar=0.0 Apr=0.0 May=0.0 Jun=0.0 Jul=0.0 Aug= Sep=0.5 Oct=0.5 Nov=2.0 Dec=2.0

12 How is our precipitation graph different then the other three graphs?

13 The wet winter/dry summer seasonality of precipitation is the defining characteristic of this climate. Summer drought places a great deal of stress on the local vegetation, but plant structures have evolved to adapt to it
