KUSH Just head south on the Nile!!

KUSH LASTED A LONG TIME Kush thrived from 2000 bce. To 350 c.e. Pre-dated and outlasted the Roman Empire Capital city of Meroe Rich in Gold!!!

Had long relationship with Egypt. (shared the Nile River) Egypt traded grain, beer, and linen for Kushs gold, ivory, leather, and timber. During the New Kingdom of Egypt, they invaded Kush. Egypt sent governor to Kush to make sure tribute was paid.

WHILE EGYPT RULED KUSH Kush paid tribute to Egypt Kush dressed and lived as Egyptians Kushites spoke and wrote in Egyptian Kushs archers fought in Egypts army Around 1100 B.C.E. Kush regained independence

KUSH CONQUERED EGYPT After fall of New Kingdom, Egypt not stable 700 B.C.E. Kush invaded Egypt King Piye declared himself pharaoh of both lands. (known as uniter of two lands) He did not tear down Egyptian culture, but rather revived Egypts past glory. Egypt paid tribute to Kush Piye made kingdom capital Meroe.

KUSH RULED 100 YEARS Until the Assyrians (remember them?) use their iron weapons and drove Kush out of Egypt. 671 B.C.E. The last of Kushite pharaohs left Egypt by mid 650s B.C.E.

The Kush Capital of Meroe Major trade center Becomes wealthy Kush traded with African kingdoms, Arabia, Rome, perhaps even China. Known for iron work, arrows and swords

KUSH RETURNS TO AFRICAN ROOTS Kush went back to using native language called Meroitic. Had own alphabet. Kush art and architecture flourished Revived practice of FEMALE LEADERSHIP KANDAKES: queen mothers ruled Meroe or co- ruled with sons or husbands. Amanirenas defended Kush against Romans

Religion WHEN EGYPT CONTROLLED KUSH: Kush worshipped Egyptian gods. WHEN KUSH CONTROLLED EGYPT: followed Egyptian religion WHEN KUSH WENT THEIR OWN WAY: they worshipped African lion-god.
