Functions of a Family Families provide the physical, emotional, social, and moral support their members need to grow and develop. Families provide for their members’ physical needs, including food, clothing, and shelter. The family is a child’s first teacher. Families help children develop values.

The Family Life Cycle Most families go through certain stages of growth and change over the years. The family life cycle includes the following stages: beginning, parenting, launching, middle-age, and retirement. family life cycle The process of growth and change in a family over the years. 5

Family Trends Every family experiences changes, many of which are the result of societal trends. Some of these trends include smaller families, divorce and remarriage, single parents, longer lives, mobility, and advances in technology. How have advances in technology changed the way families live together?

Qualities of a Strong Family Most strong families share certain qualities, including respect for one another, good communication, mutual trust, emotional support, family traditions, and support systems. support system All the people and organizations a person can turn to for help.

Types of Family Changes Responding to change or crisis can bring families together. When changes occur, every family member is affected. crisis An event or situation that overwhelms the usual coping methods and causes severe stress.

Strategies That Can Help Families must first recognize challenges that arise and then deal with them. Coping strategies include talking things over, listening, working together, and taking responsibility. Sources of help can include family, teachers, counselors, religious leaders, friends, support groups, and counselors.
