Section 19.1 How Families Work Families are designed to serve certain functions and follow a general cycle of growth. They are affected by societal trends. There are ways to make families stronger. 2

Functions of a Family Families provide the physical, emotional, social, and moral support their members need to grow and develop. Families provide for their members’ physical needs, including food, clothing, and shelter. The family is a child’s first teacher. Families help children develop values.

The Family Life Cycle Most families go through certain stages of growth and change over the years. The family life cycle includes the following stages: beginning, parenting, launching, middle-age, and retirement. family life cycle The process of growth and change in a family over the years. 5

Family Trends Every family experiences changes, many of which are the result of societal trends. Some of these trends include smaller families, divorce and remarriage, single parents, longer lives, mobility, and advances in technology. How have advances in technology changed the way families live together?

Qualities of a Strong Family Most strong families share certain qualities, including respect for one another, good communication, mutual trust, emotional support, family traditions, and support systems. support system All the people and organizations a person can turn to for help. 

Qualities of a Strong Family Even strong families need a support system, consisting of all the people and groups to which a family can turn.

Section 19.2 Family Challenges Changes affect all families. Some changes are commonplace and short-term, while others can be considered crises. There are coping strategies and outside sources to help families deal with both types of changes. 9

Types of Family Changes Responding to change or crisis can bring families together. When changes occur, every family member is affected. crisis An event or situation that overwhelms the usual coping methods and causes severe stress.

Types of Family Changes Some family changes are moving, changing jobs, having a baby, adopting a child, and gaining step-relatives. When older children or relatives move back home, it can affect all family members.

Crises A crisis is an event or situation that overwhelms the usual coping methods and causes severe stress. Some crises can involve financial hardship, divorce, teen pregnancy, health, and death.

Crises Abuse is never justified, and help must be sought for abusers. Major disasters, such as floods and earthquakes, can affect the entire family. People with alcoholism or an addition to other types of drugs need help and support to cope. alcoholism A physical and mental dependence on alcohol. abuse When a person threatens the physical or mental health of another.

Strategies That Can Help Families must first recognize challenges that arise and then deal with them. Coping strategies include talking things over, listening, working together, and taking responsibility. Sources of help can include family, teachers, counselors, religious leaders, friends, support groups, and counselors.

Chapter Summary Section 19.1 How Families Work Although families come in many forms, they all have similar functions. Families are responsible for the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development of family members.

Families are strengthened by respect, communication, trust, emotional support, sharing, and support systems.
