Engine Lubrication Systems Components Oils and Filters Maintenance

Components Oil pan Oil pump Pressure relief valve Oil galleries Oil pressure indicators

Oils Purpose of oil: Lubricate Cool Seal Oil viscosity: oil thickness or resistance to flow Oil detergents: oil additives that prevent formation of acids and help to hold impurities in suspension for filtering

Oils Multi-viscosity oil: oil that changes thickness depending on temperature; performs as a thinner oil when temperatures are low and as a thicker oil when temperatures are hot Oil thickness is measured by weight ratings

Oils

Filters

Maintenance Crankcase ventilation Oil and filter replacement intervals: Vehicles older than 1990: 3 months or 3,000 miles 1990-1999 vehicles: 5-6 months or 5,000 miles 2000 or newer Follow manufacturer’s specifications
