Chapter 14, Sec. 2-3 Essential Questions: Why were Roman Legions superior to their opponents?

The Roman Legion The Roman Legions were the finest “Professional” Army in the Ancient world. By 275 B.C., the Roman Legions had conquered all of modern-day Italy. Each Roman Legion contained 5000 Soldiers called Legionaries divided up into groups of 60-120 men.

The Legion was better than the Phalanx because of… Mobility Training Technology Support

Mobility Legions were more flexible and mobile Legions could be moved very quickly and change their routes on command

Training Legions were better organized They trained and drilled constantly

Technology Romans used a double- edged iron sword called the Gladius Ballistas to fire arrows and Catapults to hurl rocks Soldier’s Sandals helped them travel over rough terrain

Support They built military fortifications and camps regularly. Roman roads were built to stretch across their vast empire and connect with the capital city of Rome.

Roman Camps The camps were set up each and every night even if the Legion was on the march.
