A Technology With Salient Features Gi-Fi  Technology A  Technology With Salient Features Dr. D.M.D.Preethi Assistant Professor Dept. of CSE PSNACET

Introduction Now a day’s wireless technology is the most advanced technology used for data transmission and communications overcome the drawbacks related old techniques. For speedy transformation, Wi-Fi is used and next to that Gi-Fi technology is generated in wireless technology that improves our own surrounding, either work or private, by means of networking or a variety of own and wearable devices within the space and with the outside world. For transferring large files audio as well as video with high speed within seconds. Gi-Fi played the main role faster information rate in Gbps , less power consumption, small size and low cost for short range transmissions with high security.

Wimax Bluetooth Wireless Access Optical Fiber In june 2001  Invented in 1991 Bluetooth Wi-Fi In 1980s Wireless Access First developed in1970s 19th centuary Cables Optical Fiber

Gi-Fi Gi-Fi  or gigabit wireless refers to a wireless communication at a data rate of more than one billion bits (gigabit) per second. By 2004 some trade press used the term "Gi-Fi" to refer to faster versions of the IEEE 802.11 standards marketed under the trademark Wi-Fi. Gi-Fi or gigabit wireless is the world’s first transceiver integrated on a single chip that operates at 60GHz on the complementary metal oxidesemiconductor(CMOS). Gi-Fi is ten times faster than Wi-Fi and allows the wireless transfer of audio and video data up to 5gigabits per second at low power consumption within range of 10 meters at one-tenth cost.

Disadvantages of Bluetooth , Wi-Fi& Li-Fi The bit rates of Bluetooth is 800Kbps , Wi-Fi has 11Mbps and Li-Fi 1Gbps Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are having power consumptions 5mw and 10mw and lower frequency of operation 2.4GHz. LiFi systems can achieve the frequency of up to 50 THz and power consumption is not needed. Transferring large amount of videos, audios and data files take hours of time. So,to have higher data transfer rate, at lower power consumption we move onto Gi-Fi technology.(5 Gbps at 60 GHz)

Moving to Gi-Fi existing technologies The reason for pushing into Gi-Fi technology is because of the issues of existing technologies Slow data rate High power consumption Low range of frequency operation of earlier technologies i.e., Bluetooth , Wi-Fi and Li-fi This leads to introduction of Gi-Fi technology it offers some advantages over Wi-Fi, a similar wireless technology. It was developed at the NICTA(National ICT Australia Limited), Australia’s Information and  Communications Technology Research Centre of Excellence in MELBOURNE,AUSTRALIA

Gigabit wireless: The Gi-Fi integrated wireless transceiver chip, developed at the National ICT Research Centre, Australia.

Architecture of Gi-Fi : The core components of a GI-FI system is the subscriber station which available to several access points. It is based on standards of IEEE 802.15.3C For the communication among different computer devices, which includes telephones and Personal Digital Assistants(PDA), it supports millimeter- wave wireless Personal Area Network(PAN) In this network, the small antenna is mounted on the roof and it supports Line Of Sight (LOS) operation.

Time Division Duplexing Time division duplex (TDD) refers to duplex communication links where uplink is separated downlink by the allocation of different time slots in the same frequency band. TDD divides a data stream into frames and assigns different time slots to forward and reverse transmissions, thereby allowing both types of transmissions to share the same transmission medium.

Data Up Linking There is use of time division duplex for both transmission and receiving. Data files are up converted from IF range to RF 60Ghz range by using 2 mixers. The output will fed be into to a power amplifier, which feeds millimeter wave antenna.

Down Linking The incoming RF signal is first down converted to an IF signal centered at 5 GHz and then to normal data ranges. Due to availability of 7GHz spectrum, the total data will be transferred within seconds.

Frequency Division Duplexing in Gi-Fi FDD requires two separate wireless communications channels on separate frequencies, one for transmit and the other for received data. A sufficient amount of guard band separates the two bands so the transmitter and receiver don’t interfere with one another. Using FDD, it is possible to transmit and receive signals simultaneously as the receiver is not tuned to the same frequency as the transmitter.

60GHz Band Allocation

FEATURES OF GI-FI High level of frequency re-use enabled – communication needs of multiple customers within a small geographic region can be satisfied It is also highly portable-we can construct where ever we want. It deploys line of sight operation having only shorter coverage area, it has more flexible architecture. Multi-gigabit wireless technology that removes the need for cables between consumer electronic devices. More than 100 times faster than current short-range wireless technologies. Allows wireless streaming of uncompressed high-definition content.

Advantages of GI-FI : High speed of data transfer Low power consumption High security Cost effective Small size Quick deployment Highly portable, highmobility

Gi-Fi Access Devices:

APPLICATIONS OF GI-FI House hold appliances : It makes the wireless home of the future: 2. Office appliances : 3. Video information transfer:

4. Inter-vehicle communication system: 5. Broadcasting video signal transmission system in sports stadium: 6. Media Access Control(MAC) , Imaging

Gi-Fi Transmission

TECHNOLOGY CONSIDERATIONS : The Gi-Fi integrated transceiver chip is may be launched by starting of next year by NICTA, Australia will be first . Due to less cost of chip so many companies are forward to launch with lower cost. The potential of mw-WPAN for ultra fast data exchange has prompted companies like Intel, LG, Matsushita (Panasonic), NEC, Samsung, SiBEAM, Sony and Toshiba to form WirelessHD, an industry-led effort to define a specification for the next generation consumer electronics products.

Comparison Wi-Fi, Li-fi and Gi-Fi Characteristics Wi-Fi Li-Fi Gi-Fi Frequency 24GHz Up to 10THz 60GHz Range Varying 100 meters 10meters Operation Data transmission by radio waves Data transmission by light of LED blubs By 5mm chip Data transfer rate 11Mbps 1Gbps 5Gbps Power consumption 10mw No additional Power needed. 2mw Data Density Very low High Very high Cost low Very low Security Less secure High Secure

Technology Updates Within five years, we expect Gi-Fi to be the dominant technology for wireless networking which will develop wire less home and office of future. If the success of Wi-Fi and the imminent wide usage of Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is any indication, Gi-Fi potentially can bring wireless broadband to the enterprise in an entirely new way. Specifically, WirelessHD has a stated goal of enabling wireless connectivity for streaming high- definition content between source devices and high-definition displays
