1.6 Division 1 Division defines the operation of finding how many groups of a certain number (the divisor) are contained in another number or amount (the dividend). The answer is the quotient. Phrases for Division quotient divided by/into ratio Example: The quotient of 12 and 4. Translates to: 12 4 = 3 Examples: (5 times 8 equals 40) Answer: 8 (3 times 6 plus 2 equals 20) Answer: 6 R 2 Remainder Terminology divisor dividend quotient This is equivalent to b a = c Important Note: Division by zero in not possible. The correct response is undefined. An answer of zero would be incorrect. However zero divided by a number is zero. Next Slide

1.6 Division 2 Example 1:7 doesnt divide into 2. Does 7 divide into 25? Yes, 3 times. Write it directly above the 5. 3 Multiply and write it below the dividend. 2 1 Draw a line and subtract. Then bring down the next number. 4 6 Continue the process. How many times does 7 divide into 46? 6 times. Write it above in the quotient. 6 Multiply and write it below the new dividend. 4 2 Draw a line and subtract. Then bring down the next number (if there was one). 4 Answer: 36 R 4 Answer: 53 Your Turn Problem #1 Find the quotient of 636 and 12.

1.6 Division 3 Example 2: Divide 31 by 15. Write it directly above the 1. 2 Multiply and write it below the dividend. 3 0 Draw a line and subtract. Then bring down the next number. 1 2 Continue the process. How many times does 15 divide into 12? It doesnt. Write a zero above in the quotient and then bring down the next number. Multiply and write it below the new dividend Draw a line and subtract. 5 Answer: 208 R 5 Answer: 405 R 4 Your Turn Problem #2 Find the quotient of 5,269 and 13. How many times does 15 divide into 125? Answer:

1.6 Division 4 Example 3. A person earns $34,500 a year after taxes. How much does this person take home each month? Solution: The total salary is separated into 12 equal groups. Therefore, this is a division problem. 34, Answer: $2,875 Answer: 568 Your Turn Problem #3 The receipts from a basketball game totaled $5112. If each ticket was $9, then how many people attended the game?

1.6 Division 5 Average The average of a set of numbers is the sum of the numbers divided by the number of addends. Example 4. A student received scores of 72, 87, and 54. Find the average of the scores. Solution: Add the scores, then divide by = 213, Then: =71. Answer: The students average is 71. Lori has 4 math tests with scores of 76, 85, 92, and 91. Find the average of all four tests. Your Turn Problem #4 Answer: Loris average is 86. The End
