Global Outlook: Fisheries & Aquaculture

Highlights from the State of the World Fisheries & Aquaculture In 2013, global food fish production from aquaculture was 70.5 million tons & sea weed production was 26.1 million tons. China produced 43.5 million tons of food fish and 13.5 million tons of aquatic algae, accounting for over 60% of total aquaculture production. Worldwide 15 countries produced 92.7% of all farmed food fish in 2012.

Contd.. Chili and Egypt became million tons producers in 2012. The top 5 producers (China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Bangladesh) account for about 80% of production. Finfish species grown in mariculture represent only 12.6% of the total farmed fish. The farmed crustaceans account for 9.7% of food fish aquaculture.

Contd.. Molluscs production 15.2 million ton was more than double that of crustaceans. In 2012, there were a total of 567 species produced in aquaculture. The farming of tilapia is the most wide spread type of aquaculture in the world. Inland aquaculture of fin fish now accounts for 57.9% of farmed food fish globally.

Contd.. Per capita fish consumption has soared from 10kg in 1960s to more than 19kg in 2012. The fish now accounts for almost 17% of the global population intake of animal protein. In some coastal and inland countries it can top 70%. Fisheries & aquaculture support the livelihoods of 10-12% of the world’s population. Provides jobs for some 60 million people.

Contd.. Fish remains among the most traded food commodities worldwide worth almost $US130 billions in 2012. About 20.2% of the total global fish catch is currently used for the production of fish meal & fish oil. 60.8% of the total fish meal is used for aquafeed.
