Solving Algebraic Equations with Addition and Subtraction

In order to solve an algebraic equation, you have to isolate the variable. (Get the letters on one side and the numbers on the other) - 5 You need to get rid of the 5 by doing the opposite function of + which is subtract - 5 Remember to keep it balanced by doing the same to both sides of the equation 5’s cancel. Rewrite and solve

+ 3 + 3 Solve Do the opposite function. What is the opposite of - 3? Remember to keep it balanced! 3’s cancel Rewrite and solve

Now Try These. Make sure you show all your work! x + 12 = 45 y + 1 = 89 z + 78 = 121 a + 23 = 55 7 + x = 21 c – 2 = 98 b + 9 = 13 g – 8 = 20 11 + p = 50 Check
