Summary Summarise this poem in 25 words Originally is about Carol Ann Duffy moving from Glasgow to England as a child and reflecting about this as an adult.

Speaker/Structure of the poem List 3 things we learn about the speaker of this poem: Carol Ann Duffy, moved from Scotland as a child, She didn’t fit in at first, but then changed and started to belong and now is unsure about her identity How do the speaker’s feelings change?: She starts off feeling upset about moving and having a love for Scotland, but this changes as she develops more positive feelings for her life in England Why is this important?: This illustrates that everyone goes through changes in life that affect us and make us who we are, identities are complex

Themes Pick 3 themes: Identity, Change/Transition, Growing up, Isolation How are they developed in the poem? Pick at least 1 quotation for each theme

Quotations Pick 5 quotations: “skelf of shame” Identify 2 techniques used in each quotation: word choice, alliteration Explain literal and deeper meaning of the technique: Literally means that she feels only a little bit embarrassed by her brother. This has the deeper meaning that through the use of “skelf” which is a Scottish word suggests that she still has connection to her homeland. But it also suggests a small part, showing that she is adapting to her new life. What effect does it create? This creates the effect that Duffy is no longer sure where she belongs and what makes her who she is, she is slightly different and embarrassed about changing to fit in, but she does not feel the same as she once did
