Energy Chapter 12 Section 1 The Forms of Energy

Essential Question: What are the characteristics of the different types of energy? Objective: Understand that one form of energy can be transformed into another form of energy.

Energy Energy is the ability to do work. Work is done when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force.

Kinetic Energy The energy of motion. Kinetic energy depends on mass and speed All moving objects have kinetic energy. Kinetic Energy = mv^2 2

Potential Energy Energy an object has because of its position. Elastic Potential Energy-energy that is stored because the shape of the object is stretched. Gravitational Potential Energy-when an object is moved there is a force that is against the force of gravity.

Mechanical Energy The total energy of motion and position of an object. Potential and Kinetic Energy are both kinds of mechanical energy. Can be all potential energy, all kinetic energy or some of each.

Thermal Energy Do particles that make up an object move? All the kinetic energy due to random motion of the particles that make up an object. Particles move faster at higher temperatures than at lower temperatures. The faster the particles move, the greater the kinetic energy and the greater the objects thermal energy.

Chemical Energy The energy of a compound that changes as its atoms are rearranged. Form of potential energy. It depends on the position of the atoms We get chemical energy from the food we eat

Electrical Energy The energy of moving electrons. Electrons are the negatively charged particles of atoms. Power for your home comes from a power plant.

Sound Energy Consists of vibrations carried through the air. Caused by an object’s vibration. Consists of vibrations carried through the air.

Light Energy Produced by the vibration of electrically charged particles.

Nuclear Energy Energy that comes from the nucleus of an atom The energy given off by the sun comes from nuclear energy. Can be used to make electricity
