The Roaring 20’s “The Jazz Age”

Bell Ringer 2/24 Why do you think the 1920s are compared to a “candle being burned at both ends?”

Women’s Changing Role The 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920, giving women the right to vote.

Prohibition January 1920—The 18th Amendment begins and the making of, selling of, and transportation of alcohol becomes illegal. Speakeasies and bootleggers become ways around the law. This illegal drinking helps fuel the culture of the jazz age.

Conspicuous Consumption American businesses grow and prosper as Americans begin buying items by using credit. Cars and radios are the most sought after items.

Politics of the 1920’s 1920-Warren G. Harding elected President. Teapot-Dome Scandal August 1923—Harding dies.

Politics continued… 1923—Calvin Coolidge sworn in as President after Harding’s death. Serves as President from 1923-1929. Nicknamed “Silent Cal”
