2 American’s seem tired of change, don’t want to look at problems in society or in the world Presidents of the 1920’s are all Republican, all are focused on having business make money. They ignore many Progressive laws The 1920’s are generally good times for most Americans, at least finically Warren Harding's -promises a “return to normally” -Administration plague with scandal -Teapot Dome scandal -Dies in office Herbert Hoover -final president of the 1920’s -president when depression begins Calvin Coolidge -nickname silent cal -famous quote “ the business of America Is business” -symbolizes the altitude of all presidents burring the 1920’s

3 Prohibition Many groups had been fighting to end the sale of alcohol in the country Carrie Nation- was famous for going into saloons and destroying them with her hatchet The 18 th amendment prohibits the manufacturing, transportation or sale of alcohol in the country Very unpopular law, many people ignored it -bathtub gin: a popular way to get around the law was to make your own alcohol called moon shine at home -speakeasies became popular places for people to gather and drink Organized crime - comes into being to supply illegal alcohol -Al Capon becomes the most famous gangster of the 1920’s

4 Immigration and the “Red Scare” In the 1920s Americans were generally very hostel to immigrants Quota System- reduced the rumor of immigrants allowed in the country The Red Scare -Attorney General Mitchell Palmer claimed the communists had a plot to destroy America, Hysteria followed -He leads raids against the six thousand arrested Sacco and Vanzetti -Italian immigrants and anarchists were accused of committing murder -found guilty on very little evidence -appears they were executed not for the murder, but for being immigrants and anarchists Ku Klux Klan -becomes the most in any time since it started -fueled by anti-immigrants feelings -hates, Catholics, Jews, blacks, and immigrants

5 Society 2 Sports and Movies become popular –Sport stars such as Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Red Grange, become house hold names –-Movie stars are born such as Mary Pickford, Douglass Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplain, Laurel and Hardy Society in 1920s -American woman began to act more like man, they go dancing drinking and smoking -they were called flippers -African Americans make huge strides in the arts -a new kind of music, know as Jazz is born in the Mississippi Delta -Luis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are two of the best known jazz musicians -African American writers and artists begin to settle in Harlem, New York. Their work becomes known as the Harlem Renaissance
