Solving literal equations Lesson 29 Solving literal equations

A literal equation is an equation with more than one variable. Use inverse operations to solve for a specific variable. The solution will be in terms of the other variables.

Solving for a variable Solve for y: 2x+3y =10 Subtract 2x -2x -2x Div by 3 3 3 3 y = -2x + 10 3 3

Solving for variables on both sides Solve for p: 4p + 2a -5 = 6a + p Eliminate p -p -p from one side 3p + 2a -5 = 6a Subtr 2a -2a -2a 3p -5 = 4a Add 5 +5 +5 3p = 4a + 5 Div by 3 3 3 3 p = 4a + 5 3 3

solve Solve for r: 3r + 2s -7 = -4s + 4r -8

Solving a formula for a variable C = 5/9 ( F-32) solve for F Mult by 9/5 C = 5/9(F-32) 9/5 C = F-32 Add 32 9/5 C +32 = F
