Urban Land Use For people to live near needs, jobs, schools, etc. They will need to live in an urban area

Urbanization Urbanization: the movement of people from rural areas to cities Better paying jobs Urban crisis when areas grow rapidly Infrastructure: roads, sewers, bridges, police stations, schools, hospitals, etc. Gets taxed during rapid growth Urban Sprawl: rapid expansion of a city into the countryside

Urbanization When cities are built on marginal land (land that is poorly suited for building—no room for expansion, prone to disaster) such as Los Angeles and Mexico City infrastructure is expensive and dangerous to build and maintain Heat Island: heat generated by infrastructure and absorbed by buildings and concrete (natural vegetation keeps areas cooler)

Urban Planning Land-use planning: determining in advance how land will be used Planning & Zoning Commissions Mass Transit Systems Open Spaces & Greenbelts Set aside for enjoyment and ecological balance
