Bunker -Target interfaces Operational standpoint A systems standpoint Beyond technical requirements Operational requirements need to be under stood as they are design drivers Bunker CDR 2.0 Iain Sutton On behalf of the NSS project team

The Bunker an important ‘node’ systems Target systems Instrument systems Logistics NSS Bunker system Instrument systems Target NBPI LSS / NBW Facility Crane Utilities What equipment is there Instrument coponent Target systems Services PSS Bunker itself Interdependencies Bi-directional Bunker is at once an ‘operational context’ and system within broader context …

Interfaces Requirement Interface System requirements specification (SRS) Installation and removal access Interface ESS-0086197.2_3 Bunker - target monolith structures ESS-0086925_2 Bunker – Insert exchange tool (IET) ESS-0191606 ICD-R NBPP-NSS, 1064NBPP-003

ESS-0060210, Bunker System, System Requirements Specification (SRS) BS.SyR-09 Title: Installation/removal access for Target Systems elements. Statement: The Bunker System shall provide safe restricted access into the bunker for the installation/removal of Target Systems elements. Rationale: The Bunker System design shall be modular in design to allow for varying partial openings of sections of the bunker that suit the size for the handling of the Target Systems elements that need to be installed and removed in the bunker. Traceability: ConOps [1]. Verification: Review of the system design.

Unfolding the requirements Access is required for the following Target systems Beam extraction (Insertion tool) Light shutter Beam-port window ‘Target utilities’ Principal requirement(s) on bunker Removable roof Work area within volume free from permanent structures Bunker support structure Instrument components Crane capacity Insertion tool Window utilities Light Shutter

Construction phase Target system Installation Target systems installed from monolith face / instrument hall Light Shutter system NB Optics (NBEX) Beam-port window Target installations are primarily scheduled before bunker construction Access Free work area

Operational phase Target systems access Operation :Beam port activation Periodicity :yearly* IET : Remote handling tool & Cask for in-monolith plug Mass 18+ tons Length 5m Requirement fulfilled Access Free work area Roof removal Level of effort Blocks handled 23 Structural cross beams 1 Duration 12-16hrs

Monolith face interface ESS 0086925_2 Principal aspects ‘Skirt gap’ R6 pillar gap

ESS 0086925_2 Monolith skirt gap The nominal gap between systems has been maintained Monolith skirt shield wall 55 mm clearance 75 mm clearance 25 mm clearance 20 mm clearance Monolith shielding

ESS 0086925_2 Monolith R6 Additional requirement: R6 pillars to have a +/- 7mm tolerance on vertical position.

Radiological interfaces Target – NSS Monolith - Bunker Through Bulk 10% Gap streaming 90% Neutron Beam Through Bulk Working assumption Radiation emitted from all target sources into the bunker cavity, at R6, shall be less than 10% of total emitted by neutron beams. “The bunker shall shield the public from ALL sources within it

Implicit requirements Logistics

Bunker – NBEX logistics ESS-0084988 IET transport ACF docking IET handover on bunker roof from bunker crane to D01/D03 crane Exchange route NBPI/NBPP 1 3 2 Removal from Bunker Monolith crane Drop down onto Bunker transfer zone Removal with hall crane

Implicit requirements Bunker roof ‘transfer zone’ Experimental Hall crane coverage area Cranes crossover (load interchange) area Monolith crane coverage area

Logistics Principal requirement Free height below hook > 3m IET 3,6m free height 6,7m from TCS A hook height of 2.5m is a minimum for current equipment 2.7m preferred Auxiliary hoist for instrument. Special mountings will be required to ensure installation compatibility Coverage Side walls 800mm Monolith face 400mm 1,3m 3,1m 1.8m N

Take away What could possibly go wrong ?

Summing up The principal interface with respect to Target have been identified and defined. Some integration of radiological interface required Currently updates of interface documents are progressing from both sides (Target and Bunker / NSS) as design progresses in parallel. Tolerances are tight, continued vigilance approaching detailed design is critical. Guidelines will be issued at IKON for; Material use (low activation) Remote handling interfaces. Service routing. Logistics requirements. Starts with having a plan Push for reliability Building in Maintainability , manage risk Priority on critical systems Operational Integration Tooling Schedules Spares Work with experienced parters It not going to be perfect use the precious early years to Learn don't reinvent the wheel SNS ISIS Ensure future compatibility upgrade path
