STUDIO MAINTAINANCE

Students will receive a test grade each quarter based on the completion of their assigned studio maintenance task.

WASHING PAINTBRUSHES

1. CLEAN YOUR BRUSH IMMEDIATELY AFTER USING IT. Forgetting to clean a brush often means buying a new one. Acrylic paint is made of plastic and will not wash out of brushes once it has dried.

2. CLEAN YOUR BRUSHES WITH BRUSH CLEANER, detergent OR SHAMPOO. Work brush soap or shampoo into the bristles of the brush all the way down to the ferrule. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm to cool water until no trace of paint or suds are left. Paint residue that coats the bristles at their base will prevent them from coming together at the top. Gradually, the brush ends will spread apart until it no longer holds its shape.

3. STORE CLEAN YOUR BRUSH VERTICALLY Brush-SIDE-UP OR HORIZONTALLY. Storing brushes brush-side-down will destroy the shape of the brush. Do not leave the brush in water for an extended period of time.

WATER DUTY

GETTING WATER At the beginning of class, check the water jug. Fill water jug across the hall in Ms. Donaldson’s sink (Room 2002) Pour a cup of water for each of your classmates. Pour cup approximately half full of water.

TABLES

CLEANING TABLES Spray a small amount of Murphy’s Oil Soap on the table. Allow Murphy’s Oil Soap to soak on paint for 20 seconds then scrub with a sponge. Wipe table with paper towel.

CLEAN-UP PROCEDURES

PAINT PALLETS Put pallets in the dish rack on the bottom of the cart. Put plates in individual dish dividers. If wet paint on the pallets touch, they will stick together and must be thrown away.
