Title Notes: Ch. 16.5 After WWII WWII lasted for 6 yrs., 1939-1945. 60 million dead, (20 million civilians) WWII destroyed: Countryside Farming/factories Homes (many homeless)

Communism in Europe Resistance fighters against fascist leaders were mainly communist. Communist Parties in France & Italy promised change and stability. Communist violent strikes But, most feared communist & supported anti-communist parties & regulations.

Nuremberg Trials Between 1945-46, 23 nations placed Nazi war criminals on trial in Nuremberg, Germany. 22 Nazi leaders were charged for starting war, crimes against humanity, & deaths of 11 million people. 10 were executed, 2 committed suicide before execution. Other major Nazi leaders committed suicide like Hitler.

MacArthur in Japan After Japanese loss, US occupied Japan. General Douglas MacArthur demilitarized & democratized Japan. He disbaned armed forces. Huge Japanese lands were sold to small farmers & established constitutional monarchy.

Japan changed with a constitutional monarchy. Emperor no longer believed to be divine. Emperor lost political power. Japanese citizens voting rights developed. Constitutional rights bill: Article 9__ Japan will no longer go to war, only to defend the country. Japan accepted US protection & even became allies.
