6th Grade Paintings Inspired by Keith Haring Elements of Art: Line, Color Principles of Art: Repetition, Movement

Keith Haring (1958-1990) Contemporary Artist Work is graphic expression using the simplicity of line. Fusion of Art & Life (created public art). His work always carries a specific message. He started as an artist by riding the subways around NYC, when he saw a blank bulletin board he would get off the subway & do chalk line drawings of his now famous figures.

Keith Haring Sold T-Shirts, toys, posters, buttons & magnets w/ his images. He wanted to make his art available to people at a low cost. Received a lot of criticism for this.

Procedure In your sketchbook draw a minimum of 5 different possibilities of figures. •They should each be doing a different action, or in a different pose & each of your figures should represent you in some way. •Draw each of your figures lightly in pencil on thick paper. •Paint each of your figures a different color. •Paint figures with a different primary (red, blue, yellow) or secondary color (orange, green, purple), whichever color you did not paint the 5 people will be your background color. •After you paint them, go around the outside edge in black sharpie (similar to Keith Harings figures) •Arrange your figures on your large paper in a row. •In pencil draw movement lines around your figures (Refer to K. Haring) •Neatly go over your movement lines in black sharpie.

Criteria for Success, did you... 1. Successfully create 5 figures inspired by Keith Haring that represents you? 2. Paint each of your figures the correct primary & secondary colors? 3. Neatly outline each of your figures with black sharpie? 4. Create movement lines for your figures? 5. Show excellent craftsmanship: nice neat even brushstrokes, no white paper showing? 6. Follow the directions of the assignment?
