Characteristics of Modern Poetry Modernist Poetry is characterized by EXPERIMENTATION Modernist writers tried to break away from the standard rules, traditions and conventions.

Modernist Poetry: Imagism In 1912,a ,a manifesto on Modernist poetry appeared in The Chicago Magazine. The ideas on poetry found in this manifesto are the seed for the poetic movement known as IMAGISM.

Imagism: Main Principles Imagist poets defend three main ideas: Direct treatment of the things (avoid ornaments, frills or fuss). Exclusion of superflous words (precission and economy of expression)

Imagism: Main Principles Use of Free Verse (emphasis on the natural rythm of the language rather than on the sequence of a metronome).
