Presentation transcript:

Mass vs Weight vs Volume Mass is the amount of Matter in an object….or….how much STUFF is in an object Weight is the force downward due to Gravity Volume is how much space an object takes up

A balance is used for measuring mass because a balance compares an object's mass to a set of standard masses.

A spring scale is used for measuring weight because a spring scale measures the force of gravity pulling objects downward.

An object's mass is a universal constant, whereas an object's weight depends upon its location 1 kg of bananas have a mass of 1.0 kg on Earth. 1kg of bananas weighs 9.8N on Earth.

1 kg of bananas have a mass (even if they're Martian bananas) of 1.0kg on Mars (even if they're Martian bananas) 1kg of bananas weighs 3.7N on Mars

1 kg of bananas have a mass of kg on the Moon 1kg of bananas weighs 1.5 N on the Moon.

a mass of __kg in outer space... but a balance won't work here either! 1 kg of bananas have a mass of __kg in outer space... but a balance won't work here either! 1kg of bananas weighs 0.0N (they're weightless) in outer space.

Mass is measured in Grams (g) or Kilograms (Kg) Weight is measured in Newtons (N) or Pounds (Lbs) Volume is measured in Meters3 or Feet3

An objects Weight WILL CHANGE when taken into outer space. An objects Mass will not change

A Pound of nails is taken to the Moon. Will the nails Weigh More or Less than they did on Earth? Will the Mass be greater than or less than it was on Earth?

Fg = m x ag The Formula that Relates Mass to Weight is: Weight = Mass x ag or Fg = m x ag

A bag of groceries has a weight of 30 N. What is the mass in Kg? M = Fg / a g = 3.1 Kg A brick has a mass of 10 Kg. What is the weight in N ? Fg = m x ag = 98.0 N

A person has a weight of 75 Kg. What would be his weight in N?
