Comparing two Spreadsheets

Looking at a completed Spreadsheet example Open “SB2 L9 Bags-4-Birds completed.xls” There are two Prototypes, one called ‘basic’, the other ‘complex’. Only the ‘complex’ prototype is used for modelling.

In this lesson students are learning how to: analyse a spreadsheet compare two spreadsheets

At the end of this lesson students will be able to: identify strengths and weaknesses of a spreadsheet

Contrast and Compare The completed spreadsheet is not a model answer! Play around with the spreadsheet…. In pairs or small groups, you should explore the spreadsheet and list: the top 5 features that you like the top 5 features that you dislike.

Think about the following whilst you are looking at the two models… Is the ‘basic’ prototype sufficient or too simple? Is the ‘complex’ prototype ‘over-engineered’? Does the spreadsheet contain features that are not necessary? Does the spreadsheet meet requirements specified in the Brief? If not, what is missing? If it does, is it ‘over the top’? Are the models appropriate? Are they diverse enough? Is it necessary to have a chart for each model? Are the charts clear and easy to understand?

Improving own spreadsheet (15mins) Now, taking what you like and dislike about the spreadsheet you just looked at I want you to apply some changes to your own spreadsheet

And Finally…
