Metamorphic Rock Igneous and sedimentary rock subjected to intense heat and pressure are transformed into metamorphic rock. Minerals within the rocks are squeezed together. The rocks become more dense and less porous. Also, chemical changes occur within their minerals.

Metamorphic Rock Sometimes rock is squeezed into parallel layers. This is called foliation.

Metamorphic Textures Foliation is the parallel arrangement of platy minerals such as chlorite and micas in a rock. Examples include: slate, phyllite, and schist.

Metamorphic Rock Shale transforms to slate or phyllite.

Metamorphic Rock Granite forms gneiss.

Regional Metamorphism- occurs over very large areas (i. e Regional Metamorphism- occurs over very large areas (i.e., mountain ranges) and results from: major igneous rock intrusion that form and cool over long periods of time, extreme pressure and heat associated with deep burial or tectonic movements of rock, and widespread migration of hot gases throughout a region.

Contact Metamorphism- occurs locally, adjacent to an igneous intrusion or along fractures that are in contact with hot gases or condensation. The greatest intensity of metamorphism occurs at the point of interaction between the host rock and magma.

Rock Cycle Rocks are classified as to their origin. Sedimentary rocks are formed from deposited sediment that is cemented and compacted together. The sediment could have come from the erosion of existing igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rock.
