What is the Children’s Act?

The Children’s Act 2004 The Act established Children’s rights to be protected from harm. The Act also established the principle that children’s needs should take priority when situations are assessed

What the main points of the children’s Act

Makes Children’s welfare a priority

Recognises that children are best brought up within their families, wherever possible

Aims to prevent unwarranted interference in family life

Improves the way courts deal with children and families

Gives rights of appeal against court decisions

Requires local authorities to provide services for children and families in need

Promotes partnership between parents, children and the local authorities

Protects the rights of parents with children being looked after by the local authorities

Aims to ensure that children looked after by the local authorities are provided with a good standard of care
