Translating Words into Symbols Chapter 1 Section 1.5

Objective Students will translate phrases into variable expressions

Concept To solve problems using algebra, you must often translate phrases about numbers into expression containing variables. **Remember expressions do not have an equal sign**

Addition Sum of Increased More than The sum of 7 and n A number increased by 16 8 more than a number

Subtraction Difference Less than Decreased Minus The difference between a number and 9 A number decreased by 5 7 less than a number 4 minus a number

Multiplication Product of Times Of The product of 12 and a number 2 times a number One third of a number

Division Quotient Divided The quotient of a number and 4 A number divided by 15

Concept Be careful with phrases involving subtraction The phrase “5 less than x” Translates x – 5 not 5 – x The phrase “5 more than x” Translates as either 5 + x or x + 5

Example Translate each phrase into a variable expression 3 less than half of x Half the difference between x and 3

Example Eight times a number The product of three and a number Five more than a number

Example One fourth of a number Nine less than half a number A number divided by five
