What Are They? short hand for number of valence electrons an element has useful for determining how elements bond chemically (we’ll do later)

What’s in one? Chemical symbols Dots represents ALL inner electrons (e-) Dots represents ONLY the valence e- valence e- are in the outermost energy level

Writing the Diagram Write chemical symbol Determine the number of valence e-s use group numbers!! Each side has to have one dot before a pair of dots can be written

Examples Cl C Carbon Symbol: # of valence e-: Chlorine Symbol: 4 7 Cl C

How To Find Neutrons Atomic number = # of Protons # of Protons = # of Electrons Atomic mass = # of Protons + # of Neutrons FIND ON THE PERIODIC TABLE!!!!!!!
