The Writing Process 9th grade English

Step 1. Brainstorm Think about topic List ideas Random list Generate ideas

Step 2. Pre-write Organize ideas Create a thesis sentence Take ideas from brainstorm and organize into a graphic Organizer Create a thesis sentence

Step 3. First Draft Flesh out your pre-write into paragraphs (5 – 7 full sentences!) Draft an introduction (4 – 5 sentences with thesis) Draft a conclusion (4 – 5 sentences)

Step 4. Sharing Also known as peer editting or buddy editting Why? Assigned classmate Read your own draft aloud Why? Notice many more mistakes that may be otherwise overlooked Can hear flow more easily

Step 5. Revising (editting) Check for these common convention mistakes: Spelling Grammar Sentence Fragments Run-ons Content Punctuation Capitalization

Step 6. Final draft Re-write draft with all corrections made Type in MLA format on clean, white paper

Step 7. (optional) Publish Share with family and friends Submit to a newspaper or magazine Put into a book
