1 What Do Authors Do? 8 Steps of the Writing Process

2 STEP 1 BRAIN STORM/ PRE WRITING Think and decide on a topic to write about: Consider your audience. Brainstorm ideas List places to research/begin research

3 STEP 2: PLANNING Use a graphic organizer to categorize your ideas: Word Web Flow Chart Bubble Map Circle Map

4 Step 3: DRAFTING Write down your great ideas! Use your own words to tell the information you researched. Write in sentences and paragraphs even if they are not perfect. Read your writing and decide if it says what you want to tell. Show it to friends and ask for suggestions.

5 Step 4: REVISING Make your writing better! Rearrange your words, sentences, and ideas. Add new information or take some parts away. Replace overused words. Read your writing aloud to hear that it flows smoothly.

6 Step 5: EDITING Make your writing perfect! Use a different color (usually red ink) Correct your spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. Change words that are not used correctly. Rewrite it correctly and neatly.

7 Step 6: PEER-EDITING Get feedback from a friend! Constructive, not critical. Suggestions and recommendations. Change words to add interest. Input after review.

8 Step 7: PUBLISHING Share your finished piece with family members, classmates, and friends. Compose your final copy; Use your best writing for a good copy!!! Send a neat copy to a friend or relative. Put it on display! Add an illustration for interest.

9 Final Step : SHARING Prepare to share: Read your writing aloud to practice Ask a group of friends to listen. Congratulate yourself on a job well done! START PLANNING YOUR NEXT PIECE!!!
