Summaries of Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Cells and Energy Summaries of Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration

Standard(s): 1 f.-Students know usable energy is captured from sunlight by chloroplasts and is stored through the synthesis of sugar from carbon dioxide. 1g.-Students know the role of the mitochondria in making stored chemical-bond energy available to cells by completing the breakdown of glucose to carbon dioxide.

Objective(s): Students will be able to… Explain how mitochondria can break down chemical energy into usable energy for the cell. Explain how chloroplasts capture energy from the sun, and store this energy through making sugar and carbon dioxide. Identify the reactants and products of cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Explain the relationship between cellular respiration and photosynthesis.

Key Concepts All cells need chemical energy. Why do cells need energy? How do cells get energy?

Summary of Photosynthesis Organelle-Chloroplasts-converts solar energy into chemical energy Reactants (ingredients)-CO2 and water Products (what is produced)-Glucose and Oxygen

Chloroplasts

Summary of Cellular Respiration Organelle-Mitochondrion-supplies energy to the cell Reactants(ingredients)-Glucose and Oxygen Products (what is produced)-Carbon Dioxide Water, and ATP

Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis are Mirror Processes

Summary Questions Where does photosynthesis take place at in the plant cell? What are the reactants of photosynthesis? Where does cellular respiration take place at in the cell? What are the products of cellular respiration? How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration mirror processes?
