Chapter 2: Solving One-step Equations and Inequalities Section 2-3: Simplifying Variable Expressions

Vocabulary!!!! A Term is a number or the product of a number and variables. A Constant is a term that has no variables. Like Terms have identical variables. A Coefficient is a number that multiplies a variable. Ex. 7a, 6b, 9 Ex. 1, 3, 7 Ex. 3a, 2a, -4a Ex. 6a, 8b, 9t

Practice!! Name the coefficients, the like terms, and the constants: 4s + 3s – 4x + 6 Coefficients: Like terms: Constants: 3m – 2n + n - 4 Coefficients: Like terms: Constants: 4, 3, -4 3, -2, 1 4s, 3s -2n, n 6 -4

You Try!! Name the coefficients, the like terms, and the constants: 7s + 4s – 2x + 1 Coefficients: Like terms: Constants: 4m – 3n + 2n Coefficients: Like terms: Constants: 7, 4, -2 4, -3, 2 7s, 4s -3n, 2n 1 None

Simplifying Expressions You Simplify a variable expression by replacing it with an equivalent expression that has as few terms as possible. COMBINE LIKE TERMS!!! Ex. 4x + 2x + 3y 6x + 3y

Practice!! Simplify the following: 4s + 3s – 4x + 6 Combine like terms!! 7s – 4x + 6 3m – 2n + n - 4 Combine like terms! 3m – n - 4

You Try!! Simplify the following: 4s + 3s – 4s + 6s Combine like terms!! 9s 3m + 2m – m Combine like terms! 4m

Practice!! Simplify the following: 4g + 3(3 + g) Use the distributive property! 4g + 9 + 3g Combine like terms! 7g + 9 5a + 2(3a + b) Use the distributive property! 5a + 6a + 2b Combine like terms! 11a + 2b

You Try!! Simplify the following: 3x + 2(4 + x) Use the distributive property! 3x + 8 + 2x Combine like terms! 5x + 8 5a + 2(3a - b) – 3b Use the distributive property! 5a + 6a - 2b – 3b Combine like terms! 11a - 5b
