Formative Assessment

Formative Assessment... 1. Helps to check progress and provide midcourse correction so student can close the gap of where they are and the learning goal. 2. Promotes self governing skills 3. Key to help students develop critical thinking skills. (Higher levels of Bloom’s) Notes: avoid grading, offer opportunity to close gap, use assessment to enhance instruction.

Basic Strategies AVID Uses Parking Lot Learning Logs Summaries vs. Reflections Quickwrites One-pagers LOTS of HIGHER LEVEL QUESTIONING (Costa’s/Bloom’s)

Costa’s Levels of Questioning Level 1: Gathering Information- Identifying and recalling information. Level 2: Processing Information- Making sense out of information; processing the information gathered by making connections and creating relationships. Level 3: Applying Information-Applying and evaluating actions, solutions and connection made in order to predict.

Some of my favorites... Exit Slips (3 questions or less, picture, etc) use to enhance/pace instruction Color scoring: Red Blue Yellow Green Self assess, Teacher assess- provide feedback, Allow students opportunity to improve upon thier color. And…

Riddle Cards (Utilizes Costa’s 3rd Level) Front side: -Riddle (rhyming or non-rhyming) consisting of clues that refer to the meaning of the term -Picture that relates to riddle Back side: - Word / answer to riddle - Description of how riddle relates to definition (2-3 sentences) https://sites.google.com/a/richland2.org/kelly-mill-avid/avid-strategies

Vocabulary Concept Map (Utilizes Costa’s Levels 2-3) See AVID strategy tab - Definition or Prediction of Definition - Synonyms - Antonyms - Examples - Picture https://docs.google.com/a/richland2.org/document/d/10uEzzfSUzjvJd7A2TDuvBtinO--c7hJR6bgJ2jA4-vU/edit

Activity Group A: Create a vocabulary concept map using a “level 3 word” of your choice. Group B: Create a riddle card using a “level 2 word” of your choice. https://docs.google.com/a/richland2.org/document/d/1FTSiK9BLC1Vk0HbN0MI6aMrpkqHFgsfml4lq9wg-5Sc/edit

30 Second Expert Step 1: Find a partner (stay standing) Step 2: One person shares his or her thoughts for 30 seconds while the other one listens. Begin by saying…”I am an expert at this topic because I know…” Step 3: The listener summarizes what he or she heard by and begin summary with “According to _____” and summarizes what was heard. After summary, ask, “Did I get that right?” Step 4: Reverse Roles Step 5: Record any new knowledge in the right column. (See board for chart setup) - Topic: Formative Assessment
