Slam Poetry Slam poetry is the competitive art of performance poetry. It puts a duel emphasis on writing and performance, encouraging poets to focus on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. It gives a voice to the poet to express their views, emotions, life experiences or information to audiences. It often contains references to current events and issues relevant to a contemporary audience. It leaves a lasting impression on the audience. It is something that can be serious, funny, or a mix of any emotion that you want to express.

Slam Poems Covers a topic that you feel strongly about. Choose themes and subjects that many people can relate to, like relationships, politics, religion, insecurity, family-social issues, etc. Includes items such as: Imagery- descriptions using 5 senses Repetition- repeating words or phrases to make an impact Rhyme- rhyming words to create a flow in the poem Attitude- displays feelings toward your topic Persona- allows you to be someone else Razor Sharp Lines- a line that impacts and causes a reaction from the audience.

The Slam Poetry Process Write it all down- thoughts and feelings about a subject. Pretend you are speaking directly to a person or audience. Cut the fat- delete phrases that don’t add anything to your poem. Be picky about what you include. Read it out loud often- this is a poem that is meant to be read and performed so it should sound interesting when read aloud.

Slam Poem Assignment You can work alone, or in a small group (2 or 3) to write a slam poem about 1 topic/idea. THIS CAN NOT BE AIMED TOWARDS A PERSON! This must be aimed towards ideas, situations, or objects. As you write, focus on how your poem sounds aloud. There will be a chance that you will perform these in front of the class, so keep that in mind!! Requirements: 5 stanzas with 5 lines each If you work in a group, all members must speak during your performance!
