What is Energy?

Energy The ability to do work or cause a change Change in motion, color, shape, temperature, etc. There are many forms of energy Sound Light Electricity Magnetism

Energy Energy can not be made or destroyed It changes from one form to another Every time energy changes form, some energy is given off as unusable heat

Chemical Energy Energy of the electrons that form the bonds between atoms in molecules Think of fuel When fuel is burned in a car to make it run When fuel is burned in a furnace to keep it hot Food is fuel for your body – When your body burns food for energy it is CHEMICAL energy

Kinetic Energy Energy due to MOTION The faster an object moves the more kinetic energy it has The more mass an object has the more kinetic energy it has

Potential Energy STORED energy Energy that is not causing any changes now, but could cause changes in the future STORED energy

Mechanical Energy The ability to do work Energy of an object due to its motion and/or position
