1 Forms of Energy

2 What is energy??? Energy –The ability to do work. There are 8 forms of energy. Electrical Gravitational Heat Nuclear Chemical Mechanical Electromagnetic Elastic

3 Forms of Energy Mechanical Energy Energy of moving objects Examples:
Sound Tornadoes Running ----- Meeting Notes (8/30/13 14:11) ----- Have a sound demonstration ready: students put hands on throats while humming, etc.

4 Forms of Energy Heat Energy The motion of atoms in a substance
Examples: Boiling Water Lava Stove ----- Meeting Notes (8/30/13 14:11) ----- Demo: Hot and cold water food coloring demo

5 Forms of Energy Electrical Energy The movement of electrons Examples:
Electricity Lightning Northern Lights ----- Meeting Notes (8/30/13 14:11) ----- Demo: Van de Graff Generator

6 Forms of Energy Electromagnetic Energy
All types of light or electromagnetic waves Examples: Radio waves X-Rays Light

7 Forms of Energy Chemical Energy
Energy that bonds atoms together in all objects –released when bonds are broken in chemical reactions Examples: ----- Meeting Notes (8/30/13 14:11) ----- Demo: burn paper Firewood Fuels Food

8 Forms of Energy Nuclear Energy
Energy that holds the nucleus of all atoms together –released when nucleus is split or fused with another –most concentrated form of energy in the universe Examples: Nuclear bombs Nuclear power The sun

9 Forms of Energy Elastic Energy
Energy in an object due to a change in shape Examples: Sling shot Spring Trampoline ----- Meeting Notes (8/30/13 14:11) ----- Ball popper demo

10 Forms of Energy Gravitational Energy
Energy in an object above the ground Examples: Waterfall Rock Climber Skydiver ----- Meeting Notes (8/30/13 14:11) ----- Tennis ball bounce demo

11 Before we begin . . . A couple of questions
Is energy always active??? Can energy be stored???

12 Two States of Energy Kinetic Energy – energy that is active, currently doing something. Anything in motion. -waves, electrons, atoms, objects Potential –stored energy (inactive) –anything that has the possibility of releasing energy has potential energy

13 OR All Energy Is Kinetic Potential Mechanical Chemical Heat Nuclear
Electrical Gravitational Electromagnetic Elastic

14 A few things to think about…
Where does energy come from? Where does energy go when you use it? Can you make energy? Can you destroy energy?

15 The Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy can’t be created or destroyed, it can only be changed. What does this mean? We don’t make energy, we just change it to a form we can use! Energy is constantly changing its form!
