Key Physical features in Georgia

Fall Line -Natural boundary separating the Piedmont & Coastal Plains region (literally becomes a drop- off in some areas that creates waterfalls difficult to navigate through. Why do you think this feature was important in early Georgia history??)

Okefenokee swamp Fun to know: Located in southeastern GA, it is the largest freshwater swamp in North America. Fun to know: Choctaw Indians gave the name Okefenokee, meaning the “Land of the Trembling Earth” Most famous Indian tribe that occupied the swamp- Seminole.

Appalachian Mountains Southernmost point of Appalachian Mtns is in Georgia’s Blue Ridge region Highest peak in GA is Brasstown Bald (4700 feet above sea level)

Begins in the Blue Ridge region, & flows south to the Gulf of Mexico, forms border between Georgia & Alabama. Used as the water source for Atlantans. Something to ponder: The states of Alabama & Florida have been in a 20+ year “Water War” (Suing back and forth) over who has usage rights to the water. Chattahoochee River

-Forms border between South Carolina and Georgia & flows out to the Atlantic. This river has been a source of water & food for over thousands of years. -Source of drinking water and hydroelectric power for Savannah and Augusta. Savannah River

Barrier Islands WRITE THIS! Chain of islands off the coast of GA that PROTECT the mainland from storms, wind and water erosion. Fishing & paper industry is important, but the islands are mostly used for tourism and recreation destinations. There are 14 islands, but many are wildlife refuges or state parks.
