Lunar Cycle Vocabulary (on back of moon diagram) Lunar Cycle Vocabulary
Maria Dark level regions. Latin for “sea” Formed from lava flows/meteoroid impacts.
Highlands Light/elevated regions or mountains. Formed from crater impacts ejecting material.
Crater Circular hollow pits. Formed from meteoroid strikes
Regolith Loose moon rock/dust.
Eclipse When light from a celestial body is blocked by another celestial body. Solar Eclipse Lunar Eclipse
Tides the alternate rising and falling of the sea, usually twice in each day at a particular place, due to the attraction (gravitational pull) of the moon and sun.
Theory of Moons Origin: Giant Impact Theory – a planet sized object collided with Earth, and the material formed our moon.
New Moon Side of the moon we see is completely dark. Moon is BETWEEN the sun and the Earth.
Lunar Cycle The appearance of the moon as it makes one full revolution of the Earth. About 28 days.
Waxing Increasing of visible amount of the moon’s illuminated surface. RIGHT side is lit. From new moon to full moon. “Waxing is maxing”
Waning The decreasing of the visible amount of the moon’s illuminated surface. LEFT side is lit. From full moon to new moon. “Waning is draining”
Crescent Moon is only illuminated in a small sliver.
Gibbous When more than half of the moon is illuminated but not quite full.
Full Moon Side of the moon we see is fully illuminated. Earth is BETWEEN the sun and the moon.
1st Quarter When half of the moon is lit on the RIGHT side.
3rd Quarter AKA Last Quarter When half of the moon is lit on the LEFT side.
Lunar Cycle Flipbook Moon Phases
Spring and Neap Tides foldable
What causes the oceans tides? The gravitational pull of the moon and the sun (BUT mostly the moon because it is closer to the Earth!)
Describe a spring tide and a neap tide Spring tide occurs during the new and full moon. (Very HIGH high tides and very LOW low tides) THINK STRAIGHT LINE
Describe a spring tide and a neap tide Neap Tides occur during the 1st and 3rd quarter moons. THINK NINETY DEGREE ANGLE
What two moon phases occur during the spring tide? New or Full moon
What two moon phases occur during the neap tide? 1st Quarter or 3rd Quarter Moon
foldable ECLIPSES
Partial Solar Eclipse Occurs when the moon covers only a portion of the sun.
Total Solar Eclipse Occurs when the moon covers entire sun. Very rare Total eclipse can last 7 ½ minutes The corona is visible. NEW MOON
Penumbral Lunar Eclipse Occurs when moon passes in the penumbra of Earth’s Shadow. Penumbra is the area of partial shadow. Moon looks darker
Partial Lunar Eclipse When only part of the moon passes in Earth’s umbra. UMBRA – total area of shadow.
Total Lunar Eclipse Occurs when the moon passes inside the umbra of Earth’s shadow. Atmosphere of Earth bends the light from the Sun and filters out all the colors. Only red light passes behind Earth and hits the moon. FULL MOON
