1 3/27 Warm up What is an eclipse?

2 Eclipses Miss. Haase

3 What is an Eclipse? This is when the Moon, Sun and the Earth are directly in line. There are two types of Eclipses Lunar Solar

4 Lunar Eclipse When the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon.
The Moon is darkened because of Earth’s shadow Moon must be in the full Moon phase Must completely enter the umbral shadow

5 Umbra and Penumbra Shadow
Shadows have two parts because of the nature of how light curves Umbra = dark shadow Penumbra = light shadow Only observers in the Umbra are able to view a total eclipse

6 Why Does the Moon look Red?
Even though the moon is in Earth’s shadow it still receives some sunlight That light is refracted around Earth by our atmosphere Clouds, dust and pollution affect the color and brightness of the Moons appearance.

7 Solar Eclipse When the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun

8 How to properly view a solar eclipse

9 Partial and Total Eclipses
Conditions for total eclipse Moon must be full Moon must completely enter the umbra Total Solar Eclipse When the moon is closest to Earth Look bigger than the Sun and blocks it out Partial eclipse When the Moon is not quite close enough to block out the entire sun

10 Annular Eclipse When the moon is farther from the Earth
Looks smaller than the Sun Blocks out all of the Sun’s bright disk except the outer ring of sunlight

11 Cool Facts! Aristotle proved the Earth is spherical from observing a lunar eclipse From the shadow of the Earth on the moon The maximum number of solar ad lunar eclipses that occur in one year is 7 Eclipses last up to 7 minutes and 31 seconds Most are much shorter than this.

12 Upcoming Solar and Lunar Eclipses
Total Solar Eclipse: August 21, 2017 Total Lunar Eclipse: January 31, 2018 y=2010

13 Exit Ticket  What phase must the Moon be in for a lunar eclipse to occur? Answer: Full moon phase

14 Phases of the Moon

15 3-30 Warm up Waning Crescent
What is the name of this phase of the moon? Waning Crescent

16 Lunar Phases How many phases does the moon go through?
8 different phases Starting with New Moon 29 ½ days for the moon to orbit the Earth New Moon, Waxing crescent, 1st Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full moon, Waning Gibbous, 3rd quarter, Waning crescent

17 New Moon The “first” phases of the moon The moon appears dark
Side of the moon that is lit by the sun is not facing Earth

18 Waxing Crescent The surface of the moon is becoming more illuminated by the sun. Waxing = growing illumination

19 First Quarter Moon The first half of the moon is visible.
The moon is a quarter of the way around the Earth in its orbit.

20 Waxing Gibbous More than half is illuminated but not yet fully illuminated. Rugby ball shaped

21 Full Moon Entire surface of the Moon is illuminated.
Side of the Moon facing Earth is fully illuminated by the sun.

22 Waning Gibbous Illuminated surface become smaller.
More than half is still illuminated but less than full Illumination begins to decrease from the right side\

23 3rd Quarter The second half of the moon is illuminated

24 Waning Crescent Right before the new moon phase we only see a sliver of the illuminated surface

25

26 What phase of the moon is tonight?

27 Exit Ticket  How long does it take the Moon to orbit the Earth?
