Presentation transcript:

Healthy Relationships Sex Education GR 2-4 (Elementary) The explanation of sex education for elementary educators had a major focus on relationships! Family relationships, friendships, peer relationships, spousal relationships, marriages etc… Sex education for young students does not have to begin with anatomy or sex, because students should know what a good relationship is prior to learning those things. The “sex talk” is often lectured to kids by a professional outside of the school because the students have no basic knowledge. Young students have knowledge and experience in relationships and can be involved in a lesson plan that regards it. For this lesson plan the students will be in groups of 2 (count 1 and 2 around class to choose pairs or pair with the person sitting next to them)

Standards INTASC Standard #1: Learner Development The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.

State Standards & Interdisciplinary Subjects English & Language Arts 3.6.2 Write correctly complete sentences of statement, command, question, or exclamation, with final punctuation. Social Studies 4.5.1 Identify ways that social groups influence individual behavior and responsibilities. Science 4.2.7 Identify better reasons for believing something than “Everybody knows that...” or “I just know” and discount such reasons when given by others. We meet state standards of every interdisciplinary subject EXCEPT for math

What is a healthy relationship? The other person is… For this portion students in your classroom can give their input and say how think people in positive relationships are. You can write it on the board in the empty space. If the students can think of any good ones mention words like “helpful” “positive” “kind” etc Write three nice comments about your partner to share with them.

What is an unhealthy relationship? The other person is…. What kind of things would you see in an unhealthy relationship?

Are the following relationships healthy?

YES!

YES

NO Some students may think that since they see smiling that this is a healthy or happy situation. Explain to children what bullying is. Many girls grow up to be in cliques where this is their normal situation, but they do not realize that it is an unhealthy freindship/relationship. If they are told this in elementary wouldn’t that make a huge difference?!

YES

NO Absolutely not! If it has gotten to this point you may have forgotten to tell a trusted adult when you were being bullied. Avoid letting it get this far!

YES

NO But this might also be an example of a relationship. Is this healthy? If students feel this way in a relationship it is not a good thing. You should tell someone you trust like a friend, parent, or teacher.

NO The same for this! It is very important for students to know that they can talk to their teachers (or someone they trust) about being mistreated. Some students are in unhealthy relationships at home, but do not know that it is unhealthy because little people are so loving. If no one has told them and their teachers do not teach it to them, they may grow up believing that it is ok.

YES

NO

What people do you know that are in healthy relationships? The students can give their input…

Prior to students being taught about sex, permission has to be received from parents on whether or not they want their child to participate in the discussion. If you do not have permission to tell children about the topic and they ask, tell them to ask their parents about it when they get home. You do not have to lie about the topic to them, if it becomes difficult to deal with their curiosity talk to their parents or administration. These vids are related to sex ed but if you all want we can include 1 of them in the presentation…
