Matthew 5:21-26

Matthew 5:21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’

Matthew 5:22 But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire.

Ephesians 4:26-27 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.

Anger Arises… If our perceived rights are violated If someone is angry with us Someone says or does something that bothers us Someone doesn’t say or do something that we think they should We are not appreciated or shown value We are corrected or scolded

James 4:1-3 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.

Matthew 5:25-26 Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.

For Our Consideration Why do you think Jesus begins with anger in the Sermon on the Mount? How do you see the differences between anger, contempt and malice? What are some choices instead of anger? Why is reconciliation so important in the Kingdom of God?

Prayer Focus Thank You Father for grace to choose to let go of anger and replace it with love. Thank You for the Word of God that explains what you expect from Your children. Thank You for saving us and then leading us daily.
