Chapter 21-22 Study Guide

Format of the Test There will be a total of FIVE thesis statements on the test tomorrow (1/25). Each thesis will be worth SIX points, for a total of 30 points: 1 point for counterargument (x). 1 point for argument 1 (a) relevant to the topic of the prompt. 1 point for argument 2 (b) relevant to the topic of the prompt. 1 point for argument 3 (c) relevant to the topic of the prompt. 1 point for analysis and reasoning (y). 1 point for a historically defensible claim that establishes a line of reasoning.

Essay Prompts Comparison = similarities AND differences Three types of essay prompts: Comparison = similarities AND differences CCOT = continuities AND changes over time Causation = (long/short term) causes AND (long/short term) effects Study Tip: which of the following prompts HAVEN’T we covered? This prompt will likely NOT be on the test tomorrow!

Formula Thesis Formula: X. However, A, B, C. Therefore, Y. This thesis formula is merely an OUTLINE to help you keep track of what you need. It will NOT be given to you on the test!

Enlightenment, Nationalism, and Revolutions (Chapter 21): Study Tip: what did we cover in class?! look at notes we took/activities we completed? How do things connect to each other? Example: Develop an argument that analyzes the differences between the Atlantic Revolutions. We also have to talk about similarities! You need 4 different PERSIAN chart themes.

Example 1 Themes: Geography, Politics, Social, Economic Economic sanctions imposed by monarchs was a common theme that created financial struggles for both the American colonists and the French people in the late 18th century. However, each revolution had different political goals and outcomes, geography played a tremendous role in the success of the American Revolution, which was not the case in the French Revolution; and finally, the French Revolution was heavily focused on social reform while the American Revolution was not. Therefore, there were more political, geographical, and social differences than economic similarities in the American and French Revolutions. This is a very complex, well thought out thesis statement that builds on the formula we’ve been using in class.

Example 2 Themes: Geography, Politics, Social, Economic The American and French Revolutions were both caused by economic struggles. However, the American Revolution was shaped by geography, and political freedom from Great Britain, whereas the French Revolution was an internal struggle and social revolution. Therefore, the American and French Revolutions were more different than similar. This is a decent thesis statement – will earn you the points.

Example 3 Themes: Geography, Politics, Social, Economic The American and French Revolutions had many differences. However, the American Revolution was shaped by geography, and political freedom from Great Britain. Therefore, the American and French Revolutions were more different than similar. This is not a debatable thesis statement: it doesn’t have a counterargument and only includes two examples of support in the thesis.

Example 4 Themes: political, intellectual, economic, social The Haitian and American Revolutions both had different social consequences following their victories from France and Great Britain, respectively. However, both revolutions were influenced by the Age of Enlightenment, which inspired them to attain economic and political freedom from their colonizers. Therefore, historical evidence indicates that the Haitian and French Revolutions were different socially but similar intellectually, economically and politically.

Example 5 Themes: political, intellectual, economic, social The Haitian and French Revolutions both had different goals. However, both revolutions were influenced by Enlightenment thinking, attaining economic and social rights. Therefore, the Haitian and French Revolutions were similar than different.

Practice Develop an argument that analyzes the changes in society from 1450 to 1850 in ONE of the following places: 1. Great Britain 2. USA 3. Japan

Practice Develop an argument that analyzes the changes in the roles of women in western society from 1450 to 1900.

Practice Develop an argument that assess the differences in the ways Japan and Great Britain industrialized.
