What is visual literacy? Visual literacy refers to the learned ability to interpret visual messages accurately and to create such messages. Karissa White

Why is it important to know about visual Literacy? It is important to know about visual literacy because it is a big part of teaching today. There are many visual learners today and we need to know how to instruct them properly Karissa White

Why bother to use visuals in instruction Why bother to use visuals in instruction?  What value do they add to the learning process?  Visuals are important because they help students gain the skills and competencies required to succeed in an increasingly visual world Technology plays a critical role in visual media, development, and production, which all utilize critical thinking and problem solving skills in students Karissa White

How can visuals be designed to influence student learning? Most learners prefer to have colorful visuals instead of black and white We need to find out what out learners interests are and design our learning tools with that knowledge Karissa White

What are two general approaches that you may use to teach visual literacy? Decode- “read” visuals proficiently by practicing visual analysis skills. Encode- “write” visuals to express themselves and communicate with others. Karissa White

What are six types of visuals? What is an example of each type? Pictures- Photographs in a book or magazine Drawings- Teacher made drawings Charts- Tables and flowcharts Graphs- Bar or circle graphs Posters- Poster about an upcoming concert Cartoons- The comics in the newspaper, and magazines Karissa White

When could you use presentation software for instruction? Presentation software could be used for the following things: Handouts for students Note pages to copy Watch video clips on slideshows Have graphs up for students to look at Karissa White

What are the qualities of an essential question? Answers cannot be found, they must be constructed They cast old knowledge, ideas, texts, in a new light They generate more questions They lead to discovery and uncovering, rather than simply covering, a topic Students must go beyond the information given to develop their answers Karissa White
