LINEAR EQUATIONS

To find the correct answer to (something, such as a math problem) SOLVE To find the correct answer to (something, such as a math problem)

To write (something) in full form EXPANDING To write (something) in full form

To get (similar things) and bring them together COLLECTING To get (similar things) and bring them together

A correct answer to a problem SOLUTION A correct answer to a problem

Will have same variable to the same power LIKE TERMS Will have same variable to the same power

A number by which another number or symbol is multiplied COEFFICIENT A number by which another number or symbol is multiplied

A symbol that represents an unknown quantity VARIABLE A symbol that represents an unknown quantity

Having the same value, use, meaning, etc. EQUIVALENT Having the same value, use, meaning, etc.

Statements that are true for any number NUMBER PROPERTIES Statements that are true for any number

EQUATION A mathematical statement that two expressions are equal (such as 8 + 3 = 11 or 2x - 3 = 7)

EXPRESSION Numbers, symbols and operations grouped together that show the value of something

DISTRIBUTIVE PROPERTY The outside number is multiplied with each number or variable inside the parenthesis. Then combine like terms to simplify, if necessary.

EQUALITY PROPERTY Two equations that have the same answer (solution) are called equivalent equations e.g. 5 +3 = 2 + 6

CONSTANT A number on its own.

INVERSE PROPERTY Two operations that undo each other e.g. addition and subtraction or multiplication and division.

IDENTITY PROPERTY When zero is added to any number, the sum is the number, when one is multiplied by any number, the product is the number.
