Groups and Periods

Groups Go up and down The group is determined by the number of electrons in the outer energy level

Groups How many electrons can each energy level hold? Level 1 – 2

What group is this element? How many electrons in outer level? 1 So it is in group 1.

What group is this element? How many electrons in outer level? 6 So it is in group 6 (16).

What group is this element? How many electrons in outer level? 7 So it is in group 7 (17).

What group is this element? How many electrons in outer level? 1 So it is in group 1.

Periods Go left to right The period is determined by the highest energy level

What period is this element? How many energy levels? 4 So it is in period 4.

What period is this element? How many energy levels? 3 So it is in period 3.

What period is this element? How many energy levels? 2 So it is in period 2.

What period is this element? How many energy levels? 3 So it is in period 3.
