Warm Up Ryan saved $15.00 to spend at the skate rink. Ryan visited the snack bar and decided he wanted a soda for $1.89, a hot dog for $2.99, and cotton candy for $1.79. He wanted to have $10.00 to play arcade games. Ryan estimated that he would have more than $10.00 left after buying his snacks. Is he correct? Explain.

Alignment Lesson: Comparing Decimals to Solve Real World Situations

Today, you will use the following representations to solve “Real World Problems” Base 10 Grid Place Value Chart Ones . Tenths Hundredths Thousandths Number Line Base 10 Drawings

Model Airplane You will solve the preceding problem individually! Monte is building a model airplane with his grandfather. The instructions tell them they need wheels with a diameter between 1.45 and 1.475. Will a wheel with a diameter of 1.463 work?

Monte is building a model airplane with his grandfather Monte is building a model airplane with his grandfather. The instructions tell them they need wheels with a diameter between 1.45 and 1.475. Will a wheel with a diameter of 1.463 work? Individually, solve the problem using the following steps:   1. Reread the problem and determine what the problem is asking you to find. 2. Predict/Estimate the solution. 3. Determine the solution to the problem and write an explanation of your thinking in words. 4. Support your answer to the problem using the 3 different representations of a number line, base ten drawings or grids, and a place value chart. (Extra grids can be found in your notebook, Day 19!!) 5. Review your solution and determine if it is reasonable.

Share your responses with the students in your group! (2 to 3 minutes) Now your group will create a “final copy” on chart paper. Your teacher will assign one of the following representations for your group to use to solve the problem and present it to the class: Written explanation Number line Base ten drawings/grids Place value chart

Share Time After your classmates have shared their solutions to the problem, think about the following questions: What connections do you notice between the three representations and the written explantion? Which representation best reflects the thinking you did to find the solution to the problem? How do the different representations help you make sense of the problem?
