What is the horror genre? Intended to frighten its readers Scare or startle readers by inducing feelings of fear and terror It creates an eerie and frightening atmosphere Horror can be either supernatural or non-supernatural.

History of Horror The beginnings of this genre can be traced back to the 18th century. Environments with mysterious atmosphere and massive castles were some of the 1st settings. Violence and brutality in the contemporary works of horror were only outlined by a few drops of blood on the floor or a piece of cloth torn on the thorns of the bushes.

Elements of Horror Setting: Normally set in location or settings where people are most vulnerable. Dark places or at night. Examples: Haunted house, abandoned warehouses, dark forest, etc. Style: Creates suspense POV can be through “bad guys” eyes to create mystery Characters: “Bad Guys” are usually supernatural such as vampires, ghosts, monsters, or someone in a mask. “Victims” are usually vulnerable and afraid. Theme: Good VS. Evil Loyalty VS. Deceit
